a SLK280 or a SLK250 ?

Postby vinxsim » Sun May 27, 2012 1:49 pm

Hi guys, I am puzzled over this. Hope someone can enlighten me please.

Given you a choice, will you go for a 2010 SLK280 (226bhp 3.0 V6) or a 2012 SLK250 (204bhp 1.8 Turbo)?
The SLK280 is asking $160000 from a car dealer, & the new SLK250 selling $265000 with magic roof & AMG styling.

Put the look & design aside, which engine will be more reliable?

The SLK280 M272 Engine IIRC is 231bhp 3.0L V6 NA engine is a well proven engine on many other MB models I.e E, C, S, ML, SL, R class. It's the same engine on my 2011 ML300.
The 2012 SLK250 has the M271 1.8L engine has also been around for >10 years but it earlier days was seen in the SC C Class before they took out the SC & put in a TC and rising the power to 204bhp for the SLK250, C250 & E250 or the detuned W212 E200 or W204 at 184 bhp.
Rp 2 worth on the engine Q! :)

I will go for the M271 1.8L TC cos the M272 3.0L V6 engine very low efficency.
If it is BMW M54 3.0L IL6 (non-turbo @ 258bhp or 272bhp and max torque comes in much early than M272) then no brainer.

Perhaps I can help a bit here. I agree with Arsenal about the Merc 3.0 V6. It's pretty bad in fuel efficiency. My car C250 was serviced in C&C earlier this year & was given a CLC350 for a courtesy car. I used it for 3 days & found that it drinks petrol like a tank. While the V6 is smooth, it suffers from low end torque. The take off is pretty slow compared to my car. You'll need to keep high revs for spirited driving....something that tires you easily. Overall, I prefer my car better than a V6

NOTHING beats the sound of a V6 or V8..try it ! The V6 can be tuned to optimised performance too

The 0-100 for the E300 is 0.1s better than the E250 cgi on specs.
NA is "very quiet" and the cons it drinks, higher tax but on high end it dun struggle but stays there!

Unker, the M272 3.0 V6 engine too primitive and a current 1.8 or 2.0 force induction engine with good gearbox will overshadow it.
Unless you are talking about the sweet Honda 3.2 V6 high rev engine or the discontinued BMW B54 3.2 IL6 high rev engine.

And yes the M272 3.0 V6 is a perfect match for S class cos it's quiet, smooth, slow and steady......whahahahhaha
